Holy cow, the author actually got to say this through a microphone to a couple of thousand grantmakers. 2001

How many geniuses can the author be privileged to have as friends: this report came from work with Dudley Cocke, mentioned above, and Erica Kohl-Arenas, who is now a superb professor at The New School in New York City. (We used Irvine Foundation money to get this written up; sort of under the radar screen.) 2000
Miss Kalfeon taught the author in 4th grade; Miss Abbott, not named, brought the copy of Joyce’s Ulysses into his 7th grade English class and said the words in this story. 1986
Largely because the stories are so short, and therefore make good reading for creative writing classes (at least this is the author’s theory), the anthology is still in print; look, his story is a homework assignment!
Week Eight (something is messed up and I can’t seem to edit out all of these identical URLs; apologies!):
Thwarted in his attempt to lead change in San Francisco University High School’s mathematics curriculum, the author turned to the potential power of the pen to improve the learning experiences of math students. 1981
Esme is the inspiration for this blog
Song for Esme
To the tune and sensibility of Girl Crush, that great song by Little Big Town
I got a girl crush, hate to admit it but
I got a heart rush, ain’t slowin’ down
I got it real bad, want everything she has
That smile and the midnight laugh she’s givin’ you now

I got a doggie
Her name is Esme
She’s canny as can be
She’s much smarter than me
***
Esme has won my heart
Esme has wrecked my house
Esme has wrecked my car
All I own wrecked by her
***
Never a dog so fair
Ever a friend to share
It would be great if she
Stopped sending poop messages to me
***
(I got a doggie, repeat)
***
Esme’s a great beauty
Herding dogs one, two, three
Blue Heeler, Aussie
And Border Collie
***
Esme will lick your face
Innocent as can be
Specially if she’s disgraced
Having some havoc wreaked
***
(musical interlude)
***
She gallops gloriously
She is a joy to see
Pelicans, egrets, geese
From her fly on the beach
***
Rarely a dog in sight
Two against morning light
My Esme scatters them
Service dogs of blind men
***
(I got a doggie)
***
Esme’s hair’s everywhere
Esme’s hair’s in the air
Esme’s hair’s on the chair
Esme’s hair’s in my hair
***
Nine nicknames currently
One without irony
Ninth for the world to see:
“& Throw Away the Key”
